Image
By -: Stuti Singh Bsc(H) Forensic science, Vikram University, Ujjain INTRODUCTION Suicide is a major public health issue that affects individuals across different age groups and gender. Southeast Asia accounts for roughly 40% of the estimated 800000 annual suicidal deaths. In India suicide has more death than AIDS related (62000 in 2016) and maternal death (4500 in 2015) .As per Data from World Health Organization indicated that approximately one million people worldwide die by suicide each year. This corresponds to one death every 40 by suicide. According to World Health Organization (WHO) the global rate of suicide is estimated to be 11.6 per 100,000 inhabitants per year. Suicide accounts for 1.4% of total mortality and 15% of injury mortality. 10% of people with mental illness commit suicide during their lifetime and approximately 90 percent of suicide cases meet criteria for psychiatric disorders, particularly major depression, substance use disorders, cluster B personality disor

Digital Forensics: The Cybersecurity Superpower

Image
Author :  Anshita Kamble, Btech. Computer Science, Kerala Technological University, Kerala. Digital forensics and Cybersecurity are both crucial things to know and understand if you are using any kind of science or technology. Cybersecurity is about tactics & measures to protect systems, networks, and programs from digital attacks, hackers, hijackers. These cyberattacks are aimed at accessing, modifying, or damaging sensitive information, extorting money from users, cyberbullying etc. Digital forensics involves investigation of devices, avoiding computational crimes, recovers data found in digital devices using complex tools to bring justice for exploiting or tampering private information. Digital forensics and cybersecurity go hand in hand, cybersecurity wouldn’t be as impactful if it were not for the information that digital forensics provides. Cybersecurity takes information that digital forensics has found through various cases & creates ways to prevent digital forensic inv

Introduction to Firearm Examination

Image
Click to read:  Introduction to Firearm Examination Firearms examination refers to the comprehensive analysis of firearms, ammunition, and related evidence such as gunshot residues, to determine their involvement in criminal activities.  This process involves identifying unique marks on bullets and cartridge cases, examining the mechanical function of firearms, and analyzing ballistic trajectories.  The goal is to match bullets and casings to specific firearms, reconstruct shooting incidents, and provide crucial evidence in criminal investigations and legal proceedings.

SIMULATING HUMAN FLESH WITH BALLISTIC GELATINE FOR FIREARMS TESTING

Image
Author : Priyanka Gadisetti, M. Sc Forensic science, University of Calicut, Kerala Introduction : Ballistic gelatine is a substance designed to stimulate the effects of bullet wounds in animal muscle tissue. It is used in forensic ballistics to test the terminal performance of firearms ammunition. The gelatine closely mimics the density and viscosity of human and animal muscle tissue, making it an ideal medium for such tests. Ballistic gelatine is preferred over actual muscle tissue because its properties can be carefully controlled, allowing for consistent and reliable comparison of terminal ballistics. Importance : Ballistic gelatine-based tissue simulants are widely used in terminal ballistics testing and also an important tool for assessing projectile effects in living tissues. Ballistic gelatine is also the basic building material for reconstruction in forensic ballistic injuries. Steps in examination of evidence : • Preparation and Calibration of Ballistic Gelatine. • Conducting

“ART OF FACIAL RECONSTRUCTION: BRINGING FACES BACK TO THE FORGOTTEN”

Image
AUTHOR :  Deepika Sharma, B. Sc in Forensic Science, Sem II, Usha Martin University, Ranchi. When all other techniques fail, forensic facial reconstruction can be used to identify missing human remains. In this article, we aim to take a look at the numerous techniques of facial reconstruction that have been reported in the literature. Facial reconstruction can be done using a variety of methods, from two-dimensional sketches to three-dimensional plaster models. The degree of error previously experienced has decreased because of the development of a quick, effective, and affordable computerized 3D forensic face reconstruction approach made possible by advancements in 3D technology. Although there are a number of hand facial reconstruction techniques, the Manchester combination technique is said to be the most effective and precise technique for positively identifying a person. Acknowledgment enables the concerned governmental organizations to create a list to identify potential vic
